Women in Steel Conference Offers Practical Suggestions

I was fortunate to attend the second annual Women in Steel Conference with other industry professionals from throughout the country and around the world. Although I enjoyed the first conference, this one had a more personalized vibe than the previous one. I think that’s because organizers analyzed feedback and created programming that gave people exactly what they wanted.

WIS-Logo-150pxTopics discussed included how to react when something goes wrong, adapting to change, making sense of AI, giving yourself credit for accomplishments (avoiding “imposter syndrome”), and improving the workplace climate by creating a sense of belonging for team members, especially younger ones.

We also heard about ways to leverage emotional intelligence, combat stress and burnout, being a woman in a male-dominated industry, and the characteristics of successful people.

A panel discussion themed “I wish I knew then what I know now” was particularly helpful. Highlights included learning to say “yes” in a strategic way, bridging the gaps between professional strengths and weaknesses, asking questions of more experienced colleagues, thinking about long-term career objectives, being authentic, and believing that what you do adds value to the organization.

Since attending the conference, I have been applying those insights to my work, and I can already see that they are making me a better team member. I’m looking forward to the third annual Women in Steel Conference, which will take place in Indianapolis this fall.
